If you are at the phase of your marketing plan that you are considering optimizing your website for SEO (content creation) or are planning for paid ad options with SEM you need to pick the right keywords!  So, what is the "right" keyword?  The answer is pretty simple; it depends on your target audience or as you have heard me refer to them, the buyer persona that represents your ideal customers.  Early in your planning phase of your marketing strategy, you created buyer personas that uncover common questions and concerns that your potential customers may have about your particular industry that you plan to answer.   I’ve found a few tools that help you narrow down the best keywords that your buyer personas search.

1.     Be Social

Here is a reality check, if you still don’t have social media but you want to succeed in reaching new customers and maintaining relationships with your existing ones I just don’t know what to do with you!  Create a social media presence today!!  Here are a few tips from my friends at Hubspot.

  • Facebook: Facebook Graph Search to get an idea what your community is talking about as well as the Trending toolbar on the right side of their news feed where you can narrow down the topics based on your industry.
  • Twitter: Find the most talked about topics on the left sidebar of Twitter’s homepage or Twitter’s search functionality for what’s trending
  • Google+: Just like all other social platforms Google+ has a search tool to look up pages that are relevant to your industry and trending topics
  • YouTube:  YouTube has a Trends Dashboard for you to use to find out what is most important week by week. (Use this one while you can, YouTube may be removing it from their platform soon.)

2.     Visit the Hub! HubSpot Keyword Grader is one of my fav tools.   The Keyword Grader is just one of the many ways for you to get an inside look on how your keywords measure up to your competitors.

3.     Follow the Golden Goose, Google Tools: Well Duh!  Google has a whole mess of tools for you to use to narrow down the right keywords for your business.

4.     Wordtracker: Wordtracker is a smart and very sophisticated tool that will you give an estimate on if your keyword has been used and how many times.

5.      Answer The Public:  This tool just makes me giggle every time I use it!  I use it every time I need to determine if the keywords I have in mind make sense to the way my personas are searching for content online.

Now go forth and build some remarkable keywords and start getting your business some results!
